Vada is one of the popular dish in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Canada, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Sri Lanka. They either in victory different types of vada available and among them now I would like to tell about a unique vada which is really very healthy because it is prepared with urad dal. Urad dal Vada  is having different names such as Medu Vada, Ulundu Vada, Urad dal Vada, Uzhunna Vada, Uzhundhu vada. It is also called as Garelu in telugu. If you add some onions into this then it is called is “ulli garelu”. You can grind the urad dal either in grinder or mixer.
If you grind urad dal in mixer, then you need to steer it was with your hands so that the air bubbles will occur on the mixture. If it is grinded in grinder, then you don't need to mix it well because the grinder will do that work.
Ingredients for Medu Vada:

  • 1 cup of urad dal,
  • 10 curry leaves,
  • 5 to 6 pepper seeds,
  • 1 onion chopped into fine pieces,
preparation method of Garelu:
soak urad dal in water for six hours and then grind it into the mixer with sufficient amount of water.( See that you won't put too much of water it must be semi-solid). You must be able to do doughnut and drop it into the oil. The grinder mixture must not be much softer and much harder. After grinding this mixture, you can add onions, chilli pieces, pepper seeds, curry leaves. Now let this mixture for half an hour.After that, place the oil on stove and let the oil heat up well. Now prepared doughnut or disk shaped above 5 and 8 cm across and drop it into the oil. Remove it when it gets golden brown in colour. You can serve this wonderful Uzhundhu  vada with Idly, coconut chutney and sambar.
